If you are up to the challenge, then the Wilderness Leadership Expedition will provide you with an exceptional educational opportunity to travel through some of the toughest wilderness in Canada and come back safely. This 28 day course is more than an adventure vacation. It is an educationally programmed series of trips designed for potential group leaders and outdoor enthusiasts. The highlight of the course is a 9 day expedition trip through a rugged area of the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. |
4 days of concentrated lectures and preparation. Participants will get to know their small teams and prepare themselves for the upcoming expedition. Topics will include wildernes survival, wilderness living, menu planning, risk management, and expedition planning.
7 days will be spent learning and practicing wilderness living skills. Focusing on Modern Wilderness Survival in the Boreal forest environment along with basic and advanced navigation skills. Maps, Airphotos, Compass, and use of GPS Receivers will all be taught and thoroughly practiced. Further team building exercises will be conducted.
4 days will be spent mastering our survival and navigation living skills with a Trek through the Boreal Forest with minimal equipment. Small Teams will work together throughout this phase and be introduced to route finding and camp selection problems.
3 days gives everyone a chance to relax, do laundry, clean up, and repack equipment in a warm, dry lodge. An introduction to Mountain Navigation and Bear Awareness will be held along with a trip debriefing.
9 days spent in the Rocky Mountains, traveling through rugged terrain in small teams, practicing wilderness living and navigation skills. This phase will concentrate on leadership and teambuilding. The Expedition phase will allow individual and the small-teams to grow.
1 days will be spent handing in equipment and doing a final debrief and course evaluation. Each participant will receive a full evaluation from the leadership team.
The aim of the course is your professional development and skill acquisition. Constructive feedback from your peers and the course staff will be used to help this process along. The course emphasizes: extended wilderness travel above and below treeline, wilderness navigation, wilderness survival, small group leadership and team building, expedition planning and preparation, expedition risk management, Rocky Mountain and Boreal Forest ecologies.
The Wilderness Leadership Expedition is a challenging way for you to grow personally while you broaden your wilderness skill base. Participants who successfully complete the expedition will be presented the Boreal Wilderness Institute's "Wilderness Mastery Certificate" This Certificate represents a solid base of achievement in both knowledge and practical skills.
