The Boreal Wilderness Institute strives to give it many diverse clients the best quality Modern Wilderness Survival and Wilderness Navigation instruction available. The Boreal Wilderness Institute has been dedicated since its founding in September of 1994 to providing the best quality wilderness instruction and guiding available. Our Goal is to provide expert instruction in modern wilderness survival, wilderness navigation, winter and summer wilderness travel, wilderness leadership and instruction. We have and will continue to be a resource in the field through ongoing research, teaching, and practice.

Bruce Zawalsky CD, Chief Instructor
Bruce has been a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, guiding his first group in the mountains in 1981. Since then he has developed his skills in leading groups and team building at the University of Alberta, Augustana University College and through his military experience. He has studied with Mors Kochanski and developed his teaching skills through years of instruction and practice. This allows him to pass on his great wealth of knowledge of modern wilderness survival, wilderness navigation and wilderness travel. Bruce is presently writing a book on modern wilderness survival (The Canadian Wilderness Survival Manual) and is also our custom course specialist. “I know that given knowledge and the time to practice in a positive environment, “Don't make the decision to survive to late.” |
James "Jim" Hawley RN, Instructor
Jim is an individual who never loses his smile even in the worst conditions. He is an EMT and a Registered Nurse, who has worked both for the Canadian Army and in the Far East as a field medic. He has also studied Jungle Survival and Extreme Cold Weather Travel. Jim always shows great drive and determination along with a truly professional outlook on safe wilderness travel. Niall Fink, Instructor-in-Training
Niall started the Instructor Development Programme in late 2007. He has guided hunters in the Mackenzie Mountains and worked throughout Northern Alberta in the survey industry. A student of writing and anthropology, Niall also edits and contributes to some of BWI’s written content. He is an avid backcountry traveler and continues to develop new outdoor soft-goods and learn primitive and modern survival arts. Dave Buffel, Instructor and Field Cook
Dave joined us early in 1999. You will see him mostly on large group camps, where he runs his camp kitchen like a real gourmet. Don't let the Cook title fool you Dave is an excellent resource beyond the camp kitchen and an avid outdoor photographer.
