At the Boreal Wilderness Institute we are always looking for ways to give credit for mastering wilderness skills. The Wilderness Certificate Programme is designed for people who are committed to learning and to improving their wilderness skills. Each certificate represents a solid base of both knowledge and practical skills.
We believe that these programme's will allow you to build your skills while gaining the recognition you deserve. BWI offers four certificates; the Core Certificate, Survival Certificate, Navigation Certificate and the Wilderness Mastery Certification.
The Core Certificate represents a commitment to learning modern scientifically based outdoor skills and practicing them in the wilderness. It is the basis of our outdoor programme and highly reccommended for anyone travelling in the wilderness. To receive this certificate you must complete three courses; the Wilderness Survival Core Seminar, either the Wilderness Survival Winter Field Session or the Wilderness Survival Summer Field Session and the Wilderness Navigation Core Seminar.
The Survival Certificate represents a level of commitment to the improvement and mastery of wilderness survival skills. If you have an interest in modern wilderness survival, this is the series of courses you need to take. To receive this certificate you must complete three courses; the Wilderness Survival Core Seminar, and either the Wilderness Survival Winter Field Session or the Wilderness Survival Summer Field Session and the Wilderness Survival Winter Field Trek or the Wilderness Survival Summer Field Trek.
The Navigation Certificate represents a high level of mastery in gps integrate wilderness navigation skills. Participants will achieve knowledge and confidence by repeated use of topographical maps, airphotos, compass, and GPS in various terrain. If you want to learn wilderness navigate better, this is the route for you. To receive this certificate you must complete three courses; the Wilderness Navigation Core Seminar, the Wilderness Navigation Field Session, and the Wilderness Navigation Mountian Session.
The Wilderness Mastery Certification is designed to give outdoor leaders certification in the areas of modern wilderness survival, wilderness navigation, and wilderness travel. The Wilderness Mastery Certificate represents a substantial achievement in the development of your wilderness skills. To receive this certification you must complete; BWI's Survival Certificate, BWI's Navigation Certificate, and a Wilderness Expedition of 10 days or a Wilderness Survival Challenge of 5 days. Many options are available for the completion of the Wilderness Expedition, although a proper log book and a leadership roll are required on the trip.
