Interested in getting off marked Trails and into the real backcountry? The Wilderness Navigation Field Session is the 2nd Course needed to earn our Navigation Certificate. This wilderness navigation course is an opportunity to improve and practice a variety of navigational techniques including interpretation of airphotes, 1:50,000, and 1:250,000 scale topographical maps.

We cover contour interpretation, route planning and polishing up your knowledge of the MGRS and UTM grid system. Extensive map and compass skills will be practiced including declination, inclination, bearings, back-bearings, pacing, and resections. Emphasis will be on wilderness route finding and safe wilderness travel. The GPS course portion fully integrates the use of a GPS Receivers in the field with map and compass..
